بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
85:1
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ
85:1
By the heaven with its impregnable castles; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ
85:2
by the Promised Day, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:3
وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ
85:3
and by the witness and what is witnessed: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:4
قُتِلَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ
85:4
the people of the pit were destroyed - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:5
ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ
85:5
with fire abounding in fuel, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:6
إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌ
85:6
while they sat around it, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:7
وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌ
85:7
and were witnessing what they did to the believers. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:8
وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ
85:8
Against these they had no grudge except that they believed in Allah, the Most Mighty, the Most Praiseworthy, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:9
ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ
85:9
to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Allah witnesses everything. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:10
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
85:10
Surely those who tormented the believing men and the believing women and then did not repent, theirs shall be the chastisement of Hell, and theirs shall be the chastisement of burning. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:11
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ
85:11
As for those who believed and acted righteously, theirs shall be Gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great triumph. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:12
إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ
85:12
Stern indeed is your Lord's punishment. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:13
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ
85:13
He it is Who creates for the first time and He it is Who will create again, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:14
وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ
85:14
and He is the Ever Forgiving, the Most Loving - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:15
ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ
85:15
– the Lord of the Glorious Throne, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:16
فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ
85:16
the Executor of what He wills. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:17
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ
85:17
Has the story of the armies reached you, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:18
فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ
85:18
the armies of Pharaoh and Thamud? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:19
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍ
85:19
The unbelievers are indeed engaged in denying it, calling it a lie, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:20
وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ
85:20
although Allah surrounds them. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:21
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ
85:21
Nay; but this is a glorious Qur'an, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
85:22
فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ
85:22
inscribed on a well-guarded Tablet. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
