بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
53:1
وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
53:1
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:2
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
53:2
Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:3
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
53:3
And he does not say anything by his own desire. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:4
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ
53:4
It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:5
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
53:5
He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:6
ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
53:6
The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:7
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
53:7
And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:8
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
53:8
Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:9
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
53:9
So the distance between the Spectacle and the beloved was only two arms’ length, or even less. (The Heavenly Journey of Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him – was with body and soul.) - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:10
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ
53:10
So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:11
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
53:11
The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:12
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
53:12
What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:13
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ
53:13
And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:14
عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
53:14
Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:15
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ
53:15
Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:16
إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ
53:16
When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:17
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
53:17
The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:18
لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ
53:18
Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:19
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ
53:19
So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:20
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ
53:20
And subsequently the third, the Manat? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:21
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
53:21
What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:22
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ
53:22
Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:23
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
53:23
They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:24
أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
53:24
What! Will man get whatever he dreams of? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:25
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ
53:25
So (know that) Allah only is the Owner of all – the Hereafter and this world. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:26
۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ
53:26
And many an angel is in the heavens, whose intercession does not benefit the least unless Allah gives permission for whomever He wills, and whom He likes. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:27
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
53:27
Indeed those who do not believe in the Hereafter, coin the names of angels like those of females. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:28
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا
53:28
And they do not have any knowledge of it; they just follow assumption; and indeed assumption does not serve any purpose in place of the Truth. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:29
فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا
53:29
Therefore turn away from whoever has turned away from Our remembrance and has desired only the life of this world. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:30
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ
53:30
This is the extent of their knowledge; indeed your Lord well knows one who has strayed from His path, and He well knows one who has attained guidance. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:31
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى
53:31
And to Allah only belongs all whatever is in the heavens and all whatever is in the earth, in order to repay those who do evil for what they have done, and give an excellent reward to those who do good. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:32
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
53:32
Those who avoid the cardinal sins and lewdness, except that they approached it and refrained; indeed your Lord’s mercy is limitless; He knows you very well – since He has created you from clay, and when you were foetuses in your mothers’ wombs; therefore do not, on your own, claim yourselves to be clean; He well knows who are the pious. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:33
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ
53:33
So did you observe him who turned away? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:34
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ
53:34
And he gave a little, then refrained? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:35
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
53:35
Does he have knowledge of the hidden, so he can foresee? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:36
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
53:36
Did not the news reach him, of that which is mentioned in the Books of Moosa? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:37
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ
53:37
And of Ibrahim, who was most obedient? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:38
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
53:38
That no burdened soul bears another soul’s burden? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:39
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
53:39
And that man will not obtain anything except what he strove for? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:40
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ
53:40
And that his effort will soon be scrutinised? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:41
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ
53:41
Then he will be fully repaid for it? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:42
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
53:42
And that the end is only towards your Lord? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:43
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ
53:43
And that it is He Who made (you) laugh and made (you) cry? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:44
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا
53:44
And that it is He Who gave death and gave life? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:45
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ
53:45
And that it is He Who has created the two pairs, male and female? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:46
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
53:46
From a drop of liquid, when it is added? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:47
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ
53:47
And that only upon Him is the next revival? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:48
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ
53:48
And that it is He Who has given wealth and contentment? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:49
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ
53:49
And that He only is the Lord of the star Sirius? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:50
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ
53:50
And that it is He Who earlier destroyed the tribe of Aad? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:51
وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ
53:51
And destroyed the tribe of Thamud, not sparing anyone? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:52
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
53:52
And before them, the people of Nooh? Indeed they were more unjust and more rebellious than these! - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:53
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
53:53
And that it is He Who threw down the upturned townships? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:54
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
53:54
So they were covered with whatever covered them? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:55
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
53:55
So O listener! Which favour of your Lord will you doubt? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:56
هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ
53:56
He (Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) is a Herald of Warning, like the former Heralds of Warning. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:57
أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ
53:57
The approaching event has come near. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:58
لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
53:58
None except Allah can avert it. - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:59
أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ
53:59
So are you surprised at this fact? - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:60
وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
53:60
And you laugh, and do not weep! - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:61
وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ
53:61
And you are lost in play! - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
53:62
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩
53:62
Therefore prostrate for Allah, and worship Him. (Command of Prostration # 12) - Ahmed Raza Khan (English)
