Transliteration
Wahiduddin Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
90:1
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
90:1
Nay! I swear by this city - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:2
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
90:2
– this city wherein you have been rendered violable– - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:3
وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ
90:3
and I swear by the parent and his offspring: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:4
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ
90:4
Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:5
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ
90:5
Does he think that no one can overpower him? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:6
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا
90:6
He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:7
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
90:7
Does he believe that none has seen him? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:8
أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ
90:8
Did We not grant him two eyes, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:9
وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
90:9
and a tongue and two lips? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:10
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ
90:10
And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:11
فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ
90:11
But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:12
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ
90:12
And what do you know what that difficult steep is? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:13
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
90:13
It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:14
أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ
90:14
or giving food on a day of hunger - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:15
يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
90:15
to an orphan near of kin; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:16
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
90:16
or to a destitute lying in dust; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ
90:17
and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:18
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
90:18
These are the People of the Right Hand. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
90:19
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ
90:19
As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ
90:20
Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
