Transliteration
Wahiduddin Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
68:1
نٓ ۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ
68:1
Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:2
مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ
68:2
thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:3
وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ
68:3
Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:4
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
68:4
surely thou art upon a mighty morality. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:5
فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ
68:5
So thou shalt see, and they will see, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:6
بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ
68:6
which of you is the demented. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:7
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
68:7
Surely thy Lord knows very well those who have gone astray from His way, and He knows very well those who are guided. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:8
فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
68:8
So obey thou not those who cry lies. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:9
وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ
68:9
They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:10
وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ
68:10
And obey thou not every mean swearer, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:11
هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍ
68:11
backbiter, going about with slander, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:12
مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
68:12
hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:13
عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ
68:13
moreover ignoble, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:14
أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ
68:14
because he has wealth and sons. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:15
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
68:15
When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:16
سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِ
68:16
We shall brand him upon the muzzle! - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:17
إِنَّا بَلَوْنَـٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا۟ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ
68:17
Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:18
وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ
68:18
and they added not the saving words. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:19
فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ
68:19
Then a visitation from thy Lord visited it, while they were sleeping, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:20
فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ
68:20
and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:21
فَتَنَادَوْا۟ مُصْبِحِينَ
68:21
In the morning they called to one another, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:22
أَنِ ٱغْدُوا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰرِمِينَ
68:22
'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:23
فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ وَهُمْ يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ
68:23
So they departed, whispering together, - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:24
أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ
68:24
'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:25
وَغَدَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَـٰدِرِينَ
68:25
And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:26
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ
68:26
But when they saw it, they said, 'Surely we are gone astray; - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:27
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
68:27
nay, rather we have been robbed!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:28
قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ
68:28
Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:29
قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ
68:29
They said, 'Glory be to God, our Lord; truly, we were evildoers.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:30
فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ
68:30
And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:31
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَـٰغِينَ
68:31
They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:32
عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ
68:32
It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:33
كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ
68:33
Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the world to come, is assuredly greater, did they but know. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:34
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
68:34
Surely for the godfearing shall be Gardens of Bliss with their Lord. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:35
أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
68:35
What, shall we make those who have surrendered like to the sinners? - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:36
مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ
68:36
What ails you then, how you judge? - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:37
أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَـٰبٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ
68:37
Or have you a Book wherein you study? - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:38
إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ
68:38
Surely therein you shall have whatever you choose! - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:39
أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَـٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا بَـٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ
68:39
Or have you oaths from Us, reaching to the Day of Resurrection? Surely you shall have whatever you judge! - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:40
سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ
68:40
Ask them, which of them will guarantee that! - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:41
أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَـٰدِقِينَ
68:41
Or do they have associates? Then let them bring their associates, if they speak truly. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:42
يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
68:42
Upon the day when the leg shall be bared, and they shall be summoned to bow themselves, but they cannot; - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:43
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَـٰلِمُونَ
68:43
humbled shall be their eyes, and abasement shall overspread them, for they had been summoned to bow themselves while they were whole. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:44
فَذَرْنِى وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
68:44
So leave Me with him who cries lies to this discourse! We will draw them on little by little whence they know not; - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:45
وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ
68:45
and I shall respite them -- assuredly My guile is sure. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:46
أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ
68:46
Or askest thou them for a wage, and so they are weighed down with debt? - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:47
أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
68:47
Or is the Unseen in their keeping, and so they are writing it down? - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:48
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ
68:48
So be thou patient under the judgment of thy Lord, and be not as the Man of the Fish, when he called, choking inwardly. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:49
لَّوْلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ
68:49
Had there not overtaken him a blessing from his Lord he would have been cast upon the wilderness, being condemned. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:50
فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
68:50
But his Lord had chosen him, and He placed him among the righteous. - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:51
وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجْنُونٌ
68:51
The unbelievers wellnigh strike thee down with their glances, when they hear the Reminder, and they say, 'Surely he is a man possessed!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
68:52
وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
68:52
And it is nothing but a Reminder unto all beings. - A. J. Arberry (English)
