بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

78:1 عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
78:1

Of what do they question one another?

78:2 عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
78:2

Of the mighty tiding

78:3 ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ
78:3

whereon they are at variance.

78:4 كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
78:4
A. J. Arberry (English) :
No indeed; they shall soon know!

78:5 ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
78:5

Again, no indeed; they shall soon know!

78:6 أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًا
78:6

Have We not made the earth as a cradle

78:7 وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا
78:7
A. J. Arberry (English) :
and the mountains as pegs?

78:8 وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا
78:8
A. J. Arberry (English) :
And We created you in pairs,

78:9 وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا
78:9

and We appointed your sleep for a rest;

78:10 وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا
78:10

and We appointed night for a garment,

78:11 وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا
78:11

and We appointed day for a livelihood.

78:12 وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا
78:12

And We have built above you seven strong ones,

78:13 وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا

and We appointed a blazing lamp

78:14 وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًا
78:14

and have sent down out of the rainclouds water cascading

78:15 لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا
78:15

that We may bring forth thereby grain and plants,

78:16 وَجَنَّـٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا
78:16

and gardens luxuriant.

78:17 إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَـٰتًا
78:17

Surely the Day of Decision is an appointed time,

78:18 يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا
78:18

the day the Trumpet is blown, and you shall come in troops,

78:19 وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَٰبًا
78:19

and heaven is opened, and become gates,

78:20 وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا
78:20

and the mountains are set in motion, and become a vapour.

78:21 إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا
78:21

Behold, Gehenna has become an ambush,

78:22 لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًا
78:22

for the insolent a resort,

78:23 لَّـٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًا

therein to tarry for ages,

78:24 لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا
78:24

tasting therein neither coolness nor any drink

78:25 إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا
78:25

save boiling water and pus

78:26 جَزَآءً وِفَاقًا
78:26

for a suitable recompense.

78:27 إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا
78:27

They indeed hoped not for a reckoning,

78:28 وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا
78:28
A. J. Arberry (English) :
and they cried loud lies to Our signs;

78:29 وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًا
78:29
A. J. Arberry (English) :
and everything We have numbered in a Book.

78:30 فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا
78:30
A. J. Arberry (English) :
'Taste! We shall increase you not save in chastisement.'

78:31 إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا
78:31

Surely for the godfearing awaits a place of security,

78:32 حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَـٰبًا
78:32

gardens and vineyards

78:33 وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا
78:33
A. J. Arberry (English) :
and maidens with swelling breasts, like of age,

78:34 وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا
78:34

and a cup overflowing.

78:35 لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًا
78:35

Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cry of lies,

78:36 جَزَآءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا
78:36
A. J. Arberry (English) :
for a recompense from thy Lord, a gift, a reckoning,

78:37 رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا
78:37
A. J. Arberry (English) :
Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is, the All-merciful of whom they have no power to speak.

78:38 يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا
78:38
A. J. Arberry (English) :
Upon the day when the Spirit and the angels stand in ranks they shall speak not, save him to whom the All-merciful has given leave, and who speaks aright.

78:39 ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا
78:39
A. J. Arberry (English) :
That is the true day; so whosoever wills takes unto his Lord a resort.

78:40 إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا
78:40
A. J. Arberry (English) :
Lo, We have warned you of a nigh chastisement, upon the day when a man shall behold what his hands have forwarded, and the unbeliever shall say, 'O would that I were dust!'
